Line Lovin’ Crayons | Element of Art: Line | K–2 Art Lesson

This “Line Lovin’ Crayon” art lesson is a fun and engaging elementary art lesson that introduces young artists to the element of art: LINE! Designed for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade art students, this colorful mixed media project gives students a hands-on way to learn, identify, and create different types of lines while making their very own larger-than-life crayon character! 🖍️

Students will explore a variety of lines including straight, wavy, zigzag, curly, dashed, dotted, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines. They’ll begin by using oil pastels to fill their background with colorful lines before practicing their cutting, gluing, and fine motor skills to create a playful crayon character using construction paper collage. Students can add their own personality and details to make their Line Lovin’ Crayon completely unique!

This mixed media elementary art project combines drawing, oil pastel, collage, cutting, and gluing, making it a great beginning-of-the-year art lesson or introduction to the Elements of Art. With simple steps and lots of room for individual creativity, this project is especially designed with little artists in mind!

For an optional art + literacy connection, this lesson can also be paired with The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Note: The book is not included or required to complete this lesson.

This lesson is best suited for Kindergarten–2nd grade art classrooms and can easily be adapted for different ages and ability levels.
