10 Picture Books to Pair with Your Next Self Portrait Lesson

"The Real Me” lesson is a fun and interactive mixed media self portrait project. In this lesson students will not only paint their physical appearance but focus on who they are on the inside and the things that makes them special and unique. By creating drawings, collages, and words of affirmation students will be able to express their true authentic selves through this project.

Drawing a realistic self portrait can be a daunting and sometimes difficult task for students, no matter what age they are. That's why I created this step by step resource to help guide students in creating a self portrait they can feel confident about.

This resource provides short and sweet explanations for each drawing step as well as an accompanied visual that students can follow while creating their self portrait. Geared towards upper elementary and middle school students this drawing guide not only breaks down the anatomy of the human face but how to draw each individual facial feature, and provides over 30 different hair styles! It must be noted that even though all steps are provided, it's suggested that students all have access to a mirror or photograph to most accurately draw themselves.

This drawing guide can be used for so many different self portrait lessons and still allows you (the teacher) the freedom to teach self portraits using the materials of your choice.
