My husband and I's new brand Quell was born from a desire and passion to make art making as easy and accessible as possible, based on my own experience as an artist. However, one thing we didn't anticipate when we were designing our Quell Case was how much we would love it as a parent!
The amount of supplies and containers I lug around to different events for my kids is wild! Only to make a mess or lose supplies in the process. Once we loaded up a Quell case for each of our kids suddenly everything just felt so much easier! I'm not trying to be dramatic, but it was dare I say.... a GAME CHANGER.
So many of you have started buying our sketchbook cases for your littles as well, but often send me the same question "what supplies do you recommend stocking up in this case for my kids?" Well allow me to make life easy for you this holiday season by sharing some of my favorite art supplies to nurture your creative kiddo! In this guide, we’ve curated the perfect collection of supplies to fill your child's Quell Case—making it easier than ever for them to explore their artistic passions on the go!
The Importance of "Art on the Go" for Kids
As an art teacher, I have always encouraged my kids to make art by creating creative spaces at home, but let's be real- in our busy world, it's sometimes hard to give kids (and ourselves) the time and space we need to be able to relax and create art. Between going to soccer practice, gymnastics, doctor's visits, it sometimes feels like all we do is go go go! This is when we created the Quell Case. Its compact, portable design empowers kids to take their art supplies with them, whether they’re cheering on their sibling at a sports event, waiting for their food at a restaurant, drawing in their lap in the car on the way to school, or simply drawing in the morning when they wake up. By making art supplies accessible, children can capture inspiration as it strikes.
This freedom to create whenever they feel inspired (or bored) not only nurtures their creativity but also builds independence and confidence. When kids have their art tools within arm’s reach, they’re more likely to express themselves and experiment without hesitation.
Our Art Supplies to Fill Your Child’s Quell Case
To help you get started, I’ve picked some of me kiddos and I's favorite supplies to stock your child’s Quell Case. These versatile tools are perfect for sparking creativity on the go!
1. A Quality Sketchbook
One of the most valuable gifts you can give a child is a real sketchbook. Unlike loose paper, a sketchbook provides a dedicated space for children to document their artistic journey, encouraging them to take more pride and ownership of their work. Having a sketchbook fosters a sense of accomplishment and helps kids see their progress over time. The Quell Case has ample room to fit a small to medium-sized sketchbook, making it easy for kids to carry their art journal wherever they go.
2. Mechanical Pencils
Perfect for detailed drawings and sketches, mechanical pencils are an excellent tool for kids who are starting to refine their drawing skills. They’re easy to store, don’t require sharpening, and are great for doodling or adding intricate details to any piece.
3. Markers
Markers are a must-have for any young artist. We love brands like Ooly, Happido or Crayola, known for their bright colors and smooth application. With a variety of bold shades, kids can create vibrant illustrations that stand out. Plus, they fit perfectly in the Quell Case’s front pockets, ready to be grabbed whenever the creative urge hits.
4. Fun Pens
My son loves drawing with this black fountain pen by Ooly, it makes him feel like a "real artist". We also loved these colored Ooly fountain pens or Pilot marker pens. These pens come in vibrant colors and are perfect for adding flair to drawings, writing, or even journaling. The smooth flow and vivid inks encourage kids to experiment with lettering, doodles, and patterns.
5. Twistable Colored Pencils
Forget the hassle of sharpening with twistable colored pencils! These pencils are perfect for adding vibrant colors to drawings without the risk of broken tips. They fit neatly into the Quell Case’s pencil pockets, making them great for quick sketches or coloring on the go.
6. Twistable Crayons
For younger artists, twistable crayons are a game-changer. They’re durable, mess-free, and perfect for little hands. The smooth application and easy twist-up design make them great for creative moments when inspiration strikes
7. Stickers
Kiddo in a creative slump? No worries! Having stickers on hand is a fun way to spark creativity! I love to work with my kids draw a simple background in their sketchbook and then have them add stickers to the scene. Or you can have the kids start with stickers and then add a scene or word bubbles around them! This is a great pack with tons of different sticker options!
Travel Watercolor Set with Water Brush
Paint?! - I know I know, the thought of having paint on hand for your child at all times can feel a bit daunting, but trust me on this. A travel watercolor set paired with a water brush is perfect for kids and the easiest way to make them feel like a "real artist". The water brush eliminates the need for a separate water container, making it mess-free and ideal for painting in the car or at the park. The vibrant colors are perfect for capturing quick impressions or experimenting with blending techniques. All you need to do is keep a small paper towel tucked in your Quell case to help your kiddos change colors and bam! You now have a Mini Monet
There really is no wrong way to fill your Quell case. I honestly think half of of the fun is seeing how everyone (kids included) stock their case with the supplies they enjoy the most! It's such a fun way to take ownership of your artwork and your artistic process! If a child loves to draw, but isn't so much into coloring, perhaps they would rather have case filled with different types of pencils and pens! Or maybe your kiddo loves to collage! You could fill your case with scissors, paper scraps, stickers and a glue stick! The possibilities are endless :)
By filling a Quell Case with high-quality art supplies, you’re not just giving your child art materials—you’re giving them the freedom to create whenever inspiration strikes. Whether they’re sketching the world around them on a family road trip or adding colorful details to their journal while waiting at the doctor’s office, the Quell Case helps turn everyday moments into creative opportunities. As I like to say to my kids, let's create MORE and consume less!
This holiday season, inspire your young artist to embrace their creativity with the ultimate portable art kit.
