I’ll never forget the first time I walked into my high school art room greeted by a massive chalk mural entirely crosshatched across the chalkboard, announcing the theme for our class for the year. Instantly, I was in awe of his talent and just wanted to soak up everything he could teach me about making art! When we dove into oil painting, he worked on his own masterpiece right at the front of the room. His work wasn’t just in the school; it was all over the local community in the form of murals. I always loved making art, but he was the 🔥 that ignited my soul to not only improve as an artist but to become an art teacher myself.
Once I became a teacher I knew that I had to share my own true artistic abilities despite the age level I was teaching. For over 15 years I hung a mini gallery wall of some of my own paintings, or would keep a painting that I was in the process of working on, on an easel in my classroom.
If you want to instantly inspire your students, gain their respect, and show everyone that you’re more than just a break for kids to make macaroni art… show them what you can REALLY do as an artist! Here’s why:
1. Authentic Inspiration
Seeing your personal artwork gives students a real glimpse of what’s possible. It’s not just about the techniques you teach; it’s about the magic you create. That kind of inspiration is priceless.
2. Building Respect and Credibility
When your students see your art, they recognize you’re not just a teacher but a skilled artist. Your respect grows because they see you’ve got the chops to back up what you’re teaching.
3. Personal Connection
Your art tells your story. Sharing it lets students connect with you beyond the classroom. They see you as a mentor who’s walked the path they’re on and that connection can be incredibly motivating.
4. Showcasing Progress and Growth
Your art shows your journey from where you started to where you are now. It’s a visual reminder that growth takes time and practice, inspiring students to keep pushing forward. I love sharing some of the earliest drawings I made (literally from when I was in kindergarten) all the way through middle, high school and currently.
5. Demonstrating the ‘Why’ Behind Teaching
Your personal art illustrates what art means to you and also why you chose to teach it. It’s a glimpse into your passion and dedication, showing students why art matters and why you’re so invested in their learning.
6. Modeling Dedication and Passion
When students see your commitment to your craft, it motivates them to adopt that same passion. Your dedication to creating art becomes a powerful example of what it takes to succeed.
7. Providing Real-World Context
Your personal artwork makes the concepts you teach come alive. By showing how you apply these techniques in your own work, you give students a clearer picture of their real-world use.
8. Creating a Rich Learning Environment
Displaying your art in the classroom transforms it into a dynamic space full of inspiration. Students are surrounded by real examples of art, making their learning experience more engaging.
9. Fostering Artistic Dialogue
Sharing your work opens up conversations about artistic choices and creative processes. This dialogue helps students develop their own artistic voices and learn to critique work constructively.
10. Being a Role Model
You never know which student might see your work and be inspired to pursue art more seriously. By sharing your journey, you could become their favorite “famous artist” and fuel their own creative aspirations.
