Ok friends, I'm so excited! After years of drawing cozy underground animals in my sketchbook, painting them on classroom windows, and tucking them into seasonal art lessons, I am so excited to finally share that I made a cozy underground animals drawing guide!!
I have created plenty of woodland creature drawing guides over the years, but this one feels extra special. Instead of simply drawing animals as we normally see them in nature, I decided to explore something a little more imaginative. I began wondering: what do animals really do when they burrow deep underground?

Do they snuggle up with a good book?
Do they gather with friends to play a game of cards?
Do they sip warm tea by lantern light while the snow falls above?
This guide brings those curious little questions to life.
A Peek Below the Surface
Children are naturally curious about animals. They love learning where animals live, what they eat, and how they survive the seasons. But adding a gentle layer of anthropomorphism — giving animals human-like characteristics — opens the door to storytelling, imagination, and deeper creative thinking.
In this drawing guide, students learn how to:
- Draw cozy burrowing animals step-by-step
- Add simple underground tunnels and chambers
- Create warm, inviting interior details
- Use expression and posture to tell a story
The animals might be reading, baking, knitting, journaling, or hosting a tiny underground dinner party. Every drawing becomes a miniature world filled with personality.
Students can turn their drawings into full illustrated scenes, add watercolor washes for soil layers, collage textured papers for cozy interiors, or even write short stories about their burrow dwellers.
Encouraging Imagination and Storytelling

One of my favorite parts of this guide is how it invites open-ended thinking. There is no single “right way” for an underground animal to live. Some may prefer quiet and calm. Others may throw lively underground parties.
By blending drawing instruction with storytelling prompts, students naturally begin asking questions:
- Who lives in this burrow?
- What is their personality?
- What time of year is it?
- What is happening above ground?
Suddenly, a simple drawing lesson transforms into world-building!
Made for Young Artists

This guide is designed to be approachable and confidence-building. The steps are broken down clearly so students feel successful, while still leaving plenty of room for creative interpretation.
Whether used in the classroom, at home, or as part of a seasonal art unit, this resource encourages children to look beyond what they see on the surface — and imagine what might be happening just below.
I cannot wait to see the cozy underground worlds your students create!
If you’ve ever wondered what animals are really up to beneath the snow, this drawing guide just might have the answers :)
